Zadarska County

The Zadarska County has population of about 162.000 people. There are 6 major towns, Zadar, Biograd, Benkovac, Obrovac, Nin i Pag; and smaller communities, Bibinje, Galovac, Gračac, Jasenice, Kali, Kolan, Kukljica, Lišane Ostrovičke, Novigrad, Pakoštane, Polača, Poličnik, Posedarje, Povljana, Preko, Privlaka, Ražanac, Sali, Stankovci, Starigrad, Sukošan, Sveti Filip i Jakov, Škabrinja, Tkon, Vir, Vrsi Sandra i Zemunik Donji. At the coast and on the isles is mediterranean climate, and on Velebit is mountain climate. Zadar is first town in Croatia that has a university, since 1396. In Zadar was written the first croatian novel called «Planine» by Petar Zoranić. First journal in Croatia called Kralj Dalmatin was also printed in Zadar in 1806. Zadar has modern age water supply line since 1838. During the Austrian occupation, in Zadar was built the first park, The Park of Queen Jelena Madijevka. People say that about 100.000 eggs were spent for building the lighthouse on Dugi isle. Pag is famous for the special lace, but also for tasty cheese. On isle of Pašman is the only Benedictine convent in Croatia. All people with Valčić surname are originated from Ošljak located in the Zadar Canal.
