Primorsko – Goranska County
The Primorsko – Goranska County has population of about 305.000 people from which only in Rijeka live 140.000 people. In this county are 14 towns and 22 smaller communities. In the county are two of the largest isles in Croatia, Cres and Krk, but also one of the smallest, Mali Osir. The highest mountain peak in this county is Kula, and it is located in Bjelolasica.
The county is divided in three sections, hills, coastal and insular area. Hills area is very low populated but is rich with natural beauties, flora and fauna. In this part of county is continental and mountain climate. In coastal area is mostly mediterranean climate with mild effect of mountain climate. In insular area is mediterranean climate which assured tourist development of this area. On the isle of Cres is Vransko Lake which has lake level 13 meters above and bottom 60 meters under the sea level. The Vransko Lake is a hydrographical phenomenon as one of the rare freshwater lakes on the islands. From the history it is important to highlight the Bašćanska stone tablet as one of the oldest Croatian written monuments, and Vinodolski law written in Glagoljica alphabet.
The county has developed railroad, airport, sea port and road transport with the large bridge that connects isle of Krk with the coast. |
