Krapinsko – Zagorska County

The Krapinsko – Zagorska County is about 1.225 square kilometers in size and has a population of about 142.000 people. Most of the local inhabitants are Croats and also Catholics. Unemployed are about 6.000 people. There are 7 larger towns and 25 smaller communities. Towns are Klanjec, Krapina, Donja Stubica, Oroslavje, Zabok, Zlatar and Pregrada. The administrative center of the county is Krapina. The smaller communities are Marija Bistrica, Petrovsko, Radoboj, Krapinske Toplice, Kumrovec, Bedekovčina, Budinščina, Desinić, Đurmanec, Gornja Stubica, Hrašćina, Hum na Sutli, Jesenje, Konjščina, Mihovljan, Novi Golubovec, Kraljevec na Sutli, Lobor, Mače, Stubičke Toplice, Sv. Križ Začretje, Tuhelj, Veliko Trgovišće, Zagorska Sela and Zlatar Bistrica. Late Josip Broz Tito was born in Kumrovec. The county is located on the northwest of Croatia and the Sutla River is a natural border with Slovenia. This county is one of the smallest in Croatia but it is interesting that it also has population density above the country average. The climate is humid continental type with very rainy and cold winters. Interesting is that the temperature is above 0’C only in June, July and August and in winter the temperature can reach -22’C. In September, October, November and December is fog normal and often. Roads and railroads are very important for the county. The county is most famous for the archeological findings of the Krapina Neanderthal.
