It's peak as a free goverment was in the 16. century when it became the strongest economic center of eastern Adriatic sea with the naval fleet. In the 1667. it was struck by an earthquake. Later it was attached to Austria. The city was severely damaged in the Croatia independence war in bombing by the JNA. It was a home of many literates and scientists like M. Držić, I. Gundulić, R.
