Dubrovačko – Neretvanska County

The Dubrovačko – Neretvanska County is located at the very south of Croatia. It is populated with about 100.000 people. The 5 largest towns in the county are Korčula, Dubrovnik, Ploče, Opuzen and Metković. In the towns is 65% of the population. It has 17 smaller communes: Lumbarda, Mljet, Blato, Dubrovačko primorje, Pojezerje, Slivno, Norinska, Lastovo, Vela Luka, Zažablje, Smokvica, Ston, Konavle, Kula Orebić, Trpanj, Janjina and Župa dubrovačka which hold 35% of the population. The county administrative center is Dubrovnik. 80% of the county is sea, and only 20% is land. Coast is about 1000km long. Dubrovnik has average of 110 people per 1 square kilometer which is the highest in the county. Dubrovačko – Neretvanska County has very rich culture. It has 1893 culture monuments. People are most proud on a city of Dubrovnik which is a monument of a world heritage and it is planed for Ston and Korčula to become one to. Many forces have passed trough the history like Byzantium, Venice, Croats, Saracens, Normans, Hungarians, Austrians, Germans, and Turks. Even the great Napoleon included Dubrovnik into his territory. Most interesting is the fact that this county was at the time one of the first republic in the world’s history, the famous Dubrovnik Republic. The county is on border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is most famous for the tourism. Even Paris Hilton and Tom Cruise were in Dubrovnik.
